Toa Fraser

July 2007

Toa Fraser Toa Fraser (Fijian)'s debut feature film Naming Number Two takes place in Mt. Roskill, a suburban area of Aukland, where his father's family has lived for over 50 years. The film grew out of Toa Fraser's play No. 2, which won the Festival First Award at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The play had the same plot as the later movie, but was written as a solo show, with all characters performed by the young actress Madeleine Sami, who also collaborated with Fraser on his first play, the solo show Bare. With Bare, Fraser won the 1999 Sunday Star-Times Bruce Mason Award for Playwriting, along with Best New Play and Best New Playwright at the New Zealand Chapman Tripp Awards. Fraser co-wrote the screenplay to Vincent Ward and Alun Bollinger's film River Queen. Fraser was born in Kingston-Upon-Thames, England. He lives in Auckland, New Zealand, where he graduated from the University of Auckland.
