Nathaniel
Geary has directed three films about Vancouver's notorious
Downtown Eastside, a neighborhood known for its large population
of heroin users and high crime rate. After graduating from Concordia
University in film production, Geary took a job in Downtown Eastside,
at the Portland Hotel, a government-funded housing project for
disturbed drug addicts. He worked there for five years while filming
the lives of neighborhood residents, producing a short work about
gentrification for the Carnegie Action Project. Geary has received
awards for Best of the Fest and Best Director at the 1999 Yorkton
Short Film Festival, as well as Best Emerging Short or Mid-Length
Film Director from Western Canada at the 1998 Vancouver International
Film Festival (VIFF). His latest release and first feature-length
film, On the Corner, won the Western Canada Feature Film
Award at the 2003 VIFF.
"I make films because I guess I don't know what else to do
with myselfI'm compelled to create, and film is my medium.
It's also addictiveonce you make one you need to make more,
and you need, as an artist, to grow with each project. I'm trying
to create emotionally engaging films that mesh technique with
content, and that address questions of human existence while remaining
entertaining and thoughtful."
