Dominique
Jonard has traveled across Mexico to work with youth,
who often contribute to the plots, drawings, and voices of his
short animations. ¡Aguas con el Botas!, an animation
about the declining population of turtles in a coastal town, won
the Premio Pitirre for Best Animation at the 1995 Festival de
Cine de Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. In 1996 Jonard received
National Video Resources' Program for Media Artists Fellowship.
In 1998, his animation Santo Golpe, made with Tzeltal and
Tzotzil children from Zinacantán, Chiapas, won the Ariel
de Plata award of the Academia Mexicano de Ciencias y Artes Cinematográficos.
His animation Desde Adentro, produced with at-risk teenagers
from Morelia, Michoacán, has won numerous awards including
the 1998 Premio de Ciudad de Mexico in the Jornada de Cortometraje
Mexicano. Jonard has taught animation at the Universidad Autónoma
de México in Mexico City. He has also worked as a playwright,
theater director, and painter. He studied at the Californian College
of the Arts in Oakland, California. Jonard was born in L'Arbresles,
Rhone, France, and has lived in Mexico since 1977, making his
home in Michoacán since 1984.
