Morales Tarqui (Aymara) has been a videomaker since
2003. She is a member of the Coordinadora Audiovisual Indígena
Originaria de Bolivia (CAIB) and a regional representative of
the Federación Regional de Mujeres affiliated to the Confederación
Sindical de Colonizadores de Bolivia (CSCB). She works with a
pioneering community television channel, located in the village
of Sapecho, north of La Paz, Bolivia. While young, she migrated
with her family from the highlands to the tropical region of northern
La Paz. Her work as one of the first woman leaders in her community
and as a regional representative in her organization is based
on the defense and promotion of indigenous women's rights, a topic
that is reflected in her productions. Her video Venciendo el
Miedo/Conquering Fear won an award for promoting gender equality
at the Festival Internacional de Cine y Video de los Pueblos Indígenas
in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2006.
"I am proud to be a farmer and I like to cultivate rice,
coffee, corn, and citrus trees. I also participate in the women's
organization so we can solve our problems. That's why I like filmmaking,
because we can write community stories, and we can also show how
we solve the problems we face."
