Natar Ungallaq in "The Necessities of Life"Natar Ungalaaq (Inuit) is an actor, filmmaker, and sculptor whose work is in many major collections of Inuit art worldwide. He is perhaps best known for playing the lead role in the 2001 film Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (d. Zacharias Kunuk) which received the Camera D’Orat the 54th Cannes Film Festival. In 2008 Ungalaaq won Canada’s Genie Award for Best Actor for his lead role as the Inuit hunter Tivii who, tubercular, is sent south to a sanatorium in The Necessities of Life/Ce qu'il faut pour vivre (d. Benoît Pilon). He also won Quebec’s Prix Jutra for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Best Actor Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for this performance. Ungalaaq has played major roles in other Canadian and American films, including The Journals of Knud Rasmussen (2006), Glory & Honor (1998) (TV), and Kabloonak/Stranger (1995). In 2009, the Nunavut Film Development Corporation presented Ungalaaq with its inaugural Award of Distinction, to be awarded every two years to one individual who has made an important contribution to the Nunavut film and television industry. Ungalaaq has also worked behind the camera with Igloolik Isuma Productions, Arnait Video and Nunavut television.
