Guillermo Monteforte has been a key figure in the development of indigenous video in southern Mexico. A documentary videomaker, editor and cameraman, Monteforte was a founding director of Oaxaca's Centro de Video Indígena (CVI), which opened as a result of a program developed in 1990 by the Instituto Nacional Indigenista-now the Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas de México. Monteforte is a founder and active member of the media organization Ojo de Agua Comunicación. He is widely recognized for his work in video production and training in indigenous communities and his efforts to bring together indigenous producers in workshops to share skills and discuss issues. He has also been a mentor to developing media organizations. Monteforte received a National Video Resources' Media Arts Fellowship in 1999. In 1998 he received a fellowship from Ashoka, an international non-governmental organization that funds cultural innovators. Born in Italy, Monteforte grew up in El Salvador, Guatemala and Canada, and has been living in Mexico since 1986.
