 Director
Bob Jenkins produces commercials
and documentaries about Native communities of rural Alaska. His
work has been commissioned by organizations such as the Alaska
Native Health Board, the Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, the
North Slope Borough, and the University of Alaska. Heritage,
a commercial he produced for the Alaska Native Heritage Center,
won the Best Musical Score-Best Music with Lyrics ADDY at the
2000 Northwest Advertising Awards. A segment of the score—performed
by Pamyua, a Yup'ik and Greenlandic Inuit quartet—-was used
in Qayaqs and Canoes. Jenkins also specializes in time-lapse
nature photography. He received a BA from Alaska Pacific University,
where he wrote a thesis on improving media communications in Alaskan
Native communities. Jenkins has lived in Alaska since 1976, and
grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania.
"Filmmaking is a much more collaborative process than other
forms of art. And perhaps I tend to collaborate a bit more than
most producers. On the Qayaqs and Canoes project I hired
outspoken Native artist Jack Abraham and brilliant Alaska Native
former-client-turned-graduate-student Alexis Bunten to work with
us. They freely shared their opinions as the boat builders shared
their knowledge and skills throughout the production. As producer
all I had to do is continue to develop the skill of listening.
A skill often overlooked."
