María Leonarda Mex

María Leonarda Mex María Leonarda Mex (Maya) works for the Programa Educativo Visual in Mérida, Yucatán, México. In 2005 she received the Premio Estatal de la Juventud Maya from the state of Yucatán, given to young people whose work has strengthened Mayan culture and communities. Mex is the co-director and screenwriter of the documentary Kmootsi' loobil in kaajal/ The Ancient Roots of My Town, winner of the Best Documentary Award at the 2005 Festival Regional de Geografía Suaves in Mérida. She has trained in video production in workshops given by the Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indígenas. Mex, who speaks Mayan fluently, has worked for nine years as a radio host and producer for La Voz del Niño Maya/The Voice of the Mayan Child in her hometown of San Antonio Sodzil, Yucatán. She has also been a consultant for Radio XEPET in Peto, Yucatán. Mex received her BA in socioeconomics and business administration from the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Yucatán Plantel Sacalum in Sacalum, Yucatán.

"In the future I would like to continue with documentary projects, in order to continue promoting the cultural wealth of the Yucatán and to persuade new generations to continue with this work."
