Jaime Magaña

November 2006

Jaime MagañaJaime Magaña (Maya) is the coordinator of the Centro de Artes en Medios-Turix in his hometown of Ticul, Yucatán. The center is one of seven Turix media centers founded by the media organization Yoochel Kaaj: Cine Video Cultura, which Magaña joined Turix in 2002. Yoochel Kaaj organizes youth media workshops in Mayan towns and a regional video festival, Geografías Suaves. His shorts include La Radio Comunitaria and Las Tortillas de Yagavila. Magaña, a former schooteacher, composes and plays Yucatec folk music, and is a fluent Mayan speaker.

"My prime concern is the absence of media that goes beyond commercial television, for expression and communication between Mayan communities. This has motivated me to take political, ecological, social questions, as well as the exchange of experiences, as necessary themes for expression and communication among our own people."
