Warwick Thornton

August 2005

Warwick ThorntonWarwick Thornton (Kaytetye) is the director and writer of Green Bush, winner of Best Short Film in the Panorama Section of the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival, and two Dendy Awards for Australian Short Film at the 2005 Sydney Film Festival. Green Bush is a fiction inspired by Thornton's memories of his teenage job as a graveyard-shift deejay at an Aboriginal radio station in Alice Springs, Australia. Thornton has directed several short dramas and documentaries, including Rosalie's Journey (2003), about the experience of a young Ngarla woman who performed in the 1955 film Jedda. He has worked as the director of photography for many films that are noted for their beautiful images, since shooting Radiance (1998) by Rachel Perkins shortly after graduating from the Australian Film Television and Radio School with a BA in cinematography. His mother was one of the founders of Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association, and Thornton grew up assisting on the organization's film and radio projects.
