Kumaré Txicão

March 2008

Kumaré TxicãoKumaré Txicão (Ikpeng) is from Xingu Indigenous Park in the state of Mato Grosso. After his introduction to videomaking in 1997, Txicão and his friend Karané Txicão documented the Moyngo, an initiation and tattooing ceremony of the children in his village. During the 1999 Vídeo nas Aldeias workshop, the Ikpeng people re-enacted the celebration of the Moyngo. The resulting film, Moyngo, The Dream of Maragareum, a mix of fiction and non-fiction, was his first as director. In 2001, he filmed the Wagré ritual with the participation of Karané Txicão and Natuyu Txicão. During the 2001 VNA workshop, he directed, with Kanaré Txicão and Natuyu Txicão, the video-letter Marangmotxíngmo Mïrang/From the Ikpeng Children to the World. In 2006 he co-directed My First Contact with Mari Corrêa and in 2007 developed the feature-length version of the film, Pirinop, My First Contact. Both versions of the film have won international awards.
